One strange night in Paraguay

I had a strange dream and it went something like this:

There was this young man in a dark room standing by a four- poster bed, which had a painting lying on the pillow. The man had a bicorn hat in one hand and high boots. A sword at his side. And in the doorway was a girl. She wore a black lace dress and a pistol in her sash, and was holding up a perfectly formed apple in one hand and a candle in the other.

Both the young man and girl looked frightened.

The girl beckoned with the the candle. The man put on his hat and picked up the painting with great care. The girl then led the man out of the room and they disappeared. I didn’t know where they were going or why except it was on some sort of dangerous, fantastical journey. I also knew it was connected to that painting. 'Didn’t recognise it – some sort of weird, ethereal landscape – and then I woke up.

The dream slowly faded away as dreams often do.

Years later I was struggling with the first Meddlesome Adventure. How could I get that vital opening chapter of the story right? Something was desperately missing - something to hook the reader and draw them in. Mm, maybe a framing device...

Then I received a postcard from a Thai friend who had just visited the Prado museum in Madrid where she was studying. I read how she'd seen a really cool painting there and simply had to tell me. It was kind of odd. I turned the postcard and stared at the image on the front. It was the painting I had seen in my dream!

Finally, I knew how to begin the story.
